Unit 2 Dental Deductions – Winter 2026

Brad Walchuk Uncategorized

Unit 2 Members who are working in the Winter 2026 term and have not already paid the 2025-2026 Dental Coverage Premium or did not opt-out of CUPE Dental Coverage for the 2025-2026 academic year will see a “CUPE Dental” deduction on their McMaster pay statements on February 20, 2026.
The $115 deduction will appear as separate line in the “current” deductions section of your pay statement on February 20th, and a record of the deduction will stay on the “YTD” (year-to-date) section of your pay statement until the end of the 2026 calendar year. (Please note that deductions listed in the “YTD” section of your pay statement do not necessarily indicate active deductions, but are a record of deductions for the calendar year.)
Dental coverage is retroactive to September 1, 2025, and remains active until the end of August 31, 2026, regardless of which term you work in the 2025-2026 academic year.  This means that you can submit dental claims from the Fall 2025 term even if you were not working as a CUPE 3906 member in the Fall term.
If you work as a CUPE 3906 Unit 1 or 2 member in the 2026-2027 academic year (and do not successfully opt-out of coverage in the next academic year), your eligibility for coverage will continue after August 31, 2026.
If you have questions about CUPE 3906 dental coverage, please visit https://cupe3906.org/sessionals-unit-2/unit-2-dental-coverage/, or contact administrator@cupe3906.org.

Unit 4 Bargaining Update #8

leadstewardreslife3906 Uncategorized

Bargaining update

Your Unit 4 Bargaining Team believes that we have the potential to reach a tentative agreement in the very near future, but there are still several items on the table.

As of today (Tuesday, February 3rd), we’re still negotiating Compensation and Hours of Work, among a few other items.

As per the Employer’s most recent proposals, they are attempting to assign additional duties for CAs. These additional duties proposed by the Employer include:

  1. Mandatory move-out shifts;
  2. Mandatory open house shifts;
  3. Mandatory room inspection shifts.

These duties have historically been done by positions other than CAs (eg. GRAs and PAs), so by downloading this work onto CAs, the Employer is unfairly seeking to take away the paid hours of these other workers. We are of the position that these duties should not be downloaded onto CAs as this would only benefit the Employer’s own pockets, while harming Unit 4 workers.

Furthermore, the Employer is unfairly insisting that CUPE 3906 agree to a pay equity plan as part of collective bargaining. Pay equity, while important, is a process that is separate from collective bargaining and governed by separate legislation. We believe that the Employer’s assertion on this matter is highly unusual and is unreasonably delaying good faith negotiations.

What’s next?

This week, we have two more full-day collective bargaining dates booked with the Employer on Wednesday and Friday.

We believe that we are negotiating fairly and making reasonable movement in order to ensure we get the best mutually agreeable deal and the best outcome for Unit 4 workers. We are hopeful that the Employer will reconsider their proposals so that we can reach a fair deal soon.

We’ll have another update with more information on Friday!

Sincerely,

Your CUPE 3906 Unit 4 Bargaining Team

(Caleb, Elissa, Simran, Anna, Muskaan, and Vanessa)

CUPE 3906 – Statement Regarding the Situation in Iran

Brad Walchuk Uncategorized

CUPE 3906 expresses its solidarity with the people of Iran who are participating in peaceful protests in support of fundamental rights and basic freedoms.

We note with concern ongoing reports of violence, repression, arbitrary detention, and restrictions on freedom of expression affecting protesters, students, workers, and women. The rights to bodily autonomy, freedom of expression, and peaceful assembly are recognized international human rights and are central to the values of our union.

These concerns are further heightened by restrictions on communications, including digital and internet access, which have made it difficult for many people to maintain contact with family members and access reliable information.

In addition to the concerns already noted, reports from human rights organizations indicate that at least 12,000 people have been killed during the protests and their aftermath. This scale of loss of life highlights the urgent human rights implications of the ongoing repression.

As a local representing academic workers, researchers, and students, CUPE 3906 recognizes that these developments have direct impacts on members through family ties, academic relationships, and lived experience. We affirm our support for those who are seeking safety, dignity, and respect for their fundamental rights.

Many members of the CUPE community are directly affected through family, academic, and professional connections.

CUPE 3906 calls for respect for international human rights standards, including the protection of civilians and the right to peaceful dissent.

We reaffirm our commitment to solidarity, human rights and social justice, human dignity, and the principle that all people have the right to be heard.

In solidarity,
CUPE 3906 Executive

Members of Unit 1, Unit 2, and Unit 3 have access to a number of leaves, such as sick leave and bereavement leave. Members can contact staff@cupe3906.org for more information.

Unit 2 End-of-Semester Update

Brad Walchuk Uncategorized

Dear Sessionals,
We wanted to send a quick message marking the end of the fall semester and the beginning of the winter semester. Our office is closed until January 5, 2026, but we have been receiving a few questions over the break about pay dates, benefits access, and the post-contract work. You can find information about all of these things, and more, below. Happy New Year!
Final Payment (Fall)/First Payment (Winter)

The final pay of the fall semester arrived in your account on Friday December 12th and covered the period from November 23rd until December 6th. All work was paid for at this point, though we understand that some of you had final exams or grading to complete past that date (though some of you did not). Either way, that was the date that the contract was paid in full, even if there was some outstanding work to be done. For those of you teaching in the winter semester, the first pay of the semester will be January 23rd. You can see the full pay schedule for 2025/26 here.

Large Class Supplement
We have heard that some sessionals have yet to be paid the Large Class Supplemental Fee. For those of you earning the base rate ($8,922.68 for 3.0 units) and teaching a class with more than 75 students, please note that your last pay stub should have reflected an additional supplementary payment of $3.00 per student per unit for each student above 75. For a typical 3-unit course, this would amount to $9.00 per student for each student above 75. If you are earning the base rate, have taught a class with more than 75 students, and you have yet to see the supplemental fee added, please reach out to us immediately. This fee applies differently to those of you earning over the base rate – please reach out with any questions. The amount was increased from $2.00 to $3.00 effective September 1, 2025 through collective bargaining and the support we received from members.

Post-Contract work
Any post-contract work (that is, work requested by your supervisor and done after your final grades have been submitted) is separate from your contract and payable at a rate of $78.78/hour. This would include reviewing grades that are being challenged, marking exams that have been deferred, and dealing with cases of plagiarism. This is not an exhaustive list, and more information, including the appropriate form you’ll need to fill out and submit to get paid, is available here. If you are asked to perform this work and are collecting EI, please let us know.

Once your final marks were submitted (the main list of students – this does not need to include any deferred exams or extensions based on accommodations), your contract was over, and this triggered the beginning of the post-contract period.

Employment Insurance
The final pay of the fall semester was December 6th. This final pay triggered what Service Canada refers to as an ‘interruption of earnings’ and, for those of you who apply to Employment Insurance, should be the date you list on your EI application as the last pay date (not the date for which you were last paid). The ‘day for which you were last paid’ and your ‘last day worked’ should be listed as December 4th.  We would encourage all Sessionals who may utilize Employment Insurance at any point in 2026 to apply as soon as possible, even if you are employed during the winter term.

The first pay in the winter term, for those of you who are employed, will be on January 23rd and the first day of work will be January 5th. This means you might be able to collect EI from December 5th to January 4th if you have enough insurable hours. For information on EI, click here.

In certain instances, it is possible to both work and collect EI (with some clawbacks) if the amount of work have in the winter has dropped substantially from the work you had during the fall term. Please direct all questions to Service Canada.

The employer has already uploaded your ROE automatically to Service Canada, so you can apply to EI if you plan to utilize EI in the winter.
Please note that all EI decisions rest with My Service Canada and they determine the rules, eligibility, and guidelines. The dates listed above are accurate and you may or may not qualify for EI depending on individual circumstances, hours worked, eligibility guidelines, etc.

Professional Development
For those of you who are curious, applications made to the Professional Development Fund this past semester were adjudicated earlier this month, cheques were mailed out, and should arrive shortly if they have not already.

If you’ve missed the previous fall semester’s deadline, no worries, you can submit throughout the upcoming winter semester.

Health Spending Account
A quick reminder that your Health Care Spending Account (HCSA) entitlement was recently increased to $800 per academic year. The fund covers the cost of various health care related expenses (as approved by Revenue Canada) and provides a tax-free reimbursement to you. More information is available here: https://cupe3906.org/sessionals-unit-2/unit-2-benefits/

There is no cost or fee to you. The fund is secured through collective bargaining and made available to members to use as needed. Please note that if you worked in the fall, you will have HCSA entitlement and dental insurance entitlement until August 30, 2026.

First Consideration Appointments

One major question we get related to seniority relates to job security. Sessionals have job security in the form of First Consideration Appointments. These function in the same way as a right of first refusal. First Consideration Appointments are a form of job security that occurs when you are appointed to a course without having to apply to it through a competitive application process.

You become eligible for a Standard First Consideration Appointment when you have taught the course for two consecutive appointments after applying to teach it in two open competitions. With First Consideration, you are entitled to be appointed to that course, without it being posted or you needing to apply for it, the next three times that it is offered to Sessional Faculty.

Members who have completed a Standard First Consideration Appointment are then eligible for an Enhanced First Consideration Appointment. When the course is posted again and you are hired in an open competition, you are then entitled to be appointed to that course, without needing to apply for it, the next four times that the course is offered to Sessionals.

Once you have secured a Standard or Enhanced First Consideration, the department can extend your appointment and continue to appoint you directly.

Presidential Election Results

Brad Walchuk Uncategorized

Voting for the president election, initiated at the December 16th General Membership Meeting, has concluded. Mitchell Lupa has been elected President. Congratulations Mitchell, and welcome to the executive committee. Mitchell’s term begins at 12:01 a.m. on December 23rd. Kusum Bhatta will remain in the Vice President role.

The Local would also like to thank Oluwadamilola (Dams), the former president, for her service to the Local since first being elected to the executive committee in October 2024.

Unit 2 Professional Development Fund application- Submit ASAP!!!

Brad Walchuk Uncategorized

Dear Unit 2 Members,

Please submit any outstanding Fall 2025 Professional Development Fund (PDF) applications as soon as possible so they can be adjudicated.

You can find information about PDF eligibility, application forms, and submission instructions on our website: https://cupe3906.org/sessionals-unit-2/professional-development-fund-unit-2/

Afraid you will miss the Fall deadline? That’s okay! If you are teaching as Unit 2 member at any point this academic year (i.e., September 1, 2025 to August 31, 2026), you can still submit applications for the Winter Term deadline (Tuesday, April 7, 2026) or the Spring/Summer deadline (August 14, 2026). Even if you are not teaching in the Winter 2026 or Spring/Summer 2026 Term(s), you can still submit an application for the April 2026 or August 2026 deadlines if you’ve taught this term!
