In November 2017, CUPE Local 3906 filed a grievance against McMaster University on behalf of
women/women‐identified Postdocs alleging a violation of the Unit 3 Collective Agreement and the
Equal Pay provisions of the Employment Standards Act (Part XII, Article 42‐ Equal Work for Equal Pay).
After a lengthy review of the matter, the Parties have agreed to a resolution that applies to
women/women‐identified Postdocs employed in the Faculty of Science and fully resolves the
grievance. The Parties have concluded that an inequitable wage gap did not exist in other Faculties,
nor that an inequitable wage gap adversely impacted male/male‐identified Postdocs. The settlement
effectively addresses what the Union believed to be a systemic wage gap between men and women
The resolution represents a meaningful gain for the members to whom this settlement applies and
helps to advance equal pay in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields.
The resolution also mandates proactive practices that the Parties believe will ensure that a similar
situation will not occur again.
