Supplemented Fees for Large Class Size

For many Sessionals, especially those earning the base-rate for 3.0 units, a large class supplement is available for classes over 75 students (and applies to each student in excess of the 75th student).

Effective September 1, 2025, this fee is $3.00 per unit taught and for every student in excess of 75 students **$2.00 per unit taught until August 31, 2025*

Formula: Units per course taught x (Official Class Size – 75) x per unit rate= lump sum payment

For example, in the case of a 3-unit course taught with 100 students the formula is:
3 x (100-75) x $3.00 = $225.00 (gross)

All payments are subject to applicable statutory deductions.

Supplemented fees shall be processed automatically following the first occurrence of “the last day for cancelling courses without failure by default” as specified in the University Undergraduate Calendar, and prior to the end of the Term. Official Class Size shall be determined by the Registrar’s Office on the first business day following “the last day for cancelling courses without failure by default” as specified in the University Undergraduate Calendar.

For Sessionals earning over the base-rate, primarily those in Engineering and DeGroote, the formula is applied differently. Article 15.02 of the Collective Agreement states that for those earning over the base-rate, “the actual rate of pay, when in excess of the base rate of pay is deemed to include any supplemented fees owing, to the extent of the excess amount. If the actual rate of pay is less than the sum of the base rate of pay and the supplemented fees owing then the employee shall receive the difference.”

For example, in 2024-25, with the base rate of $8056.37, a class of 150 students would be 75 additional students over the threshold of 75 students at $2 per student per unit, meaning that someone earning the base rate would be entitled to $8056.37 plus $450 (75 additional students x $2 per student x 3 units), or $8506.37. However, if for example, the department paid a premium rate of $8500 and enrollment was 150 (ie/ an extra 75 students over the threshold), that would be more than the base plus the large class and would negate most of the additional payment, and you would be entitled to an additional $6.37.

Interruption of Earnings (end of contract)

This final pay of each semester represents what Service Canada refers to as an ‘interruption of earnings.’  If you apply for EI, the ‘day for which you were last paid’  and your ‘last day worked’  should be listed on your EI application.  If you apply for – and receive – EI, you will need to report the first day of work to end your EI payments.

At the end of each semester, the employer will upload your ROE automatically to Service Canada, generally with 5 business days following the last pay.

Post-contract Work

The post-contract form (covering any work which an employee’s Supervisor and the employee have agreed that the employee will perform after the submission and approval of final grades) is paid at the rate listed below. You can find the post-contract work payment form here.
