Dear CUPE 3906 Members,
I am Sudarshan Sharma and I am in the 2nd year of my master’s and will be starting my PhD
in Fall 2020 in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. In my short stay here at mac, I
served as a member of the international committee and helped Avijit Malick in organizing
international dinners for the local. I was also a member of the bargaining support team for
unit 1.
The year 2020 has come with its own challenges and obstacles, and the discussion of health
and occupational hazards has never been more pertinent. With such trying times, I would
like to throw my hat in the ring for the opportunity to serve our collective unit in
maintaining their health and safety as we proceed towards a life of coexistence with Covid19, at least for the coming year. As the university is planning to open labs for graduate
students requiring on-campus infrastructure, maintaining social distancing while
maintaining safe conditions is very important. Therefore, I look forward to reviewing and
recommending revisions for the Collective Agreement, keeping sight of the membership’s
occupational health and safety, ensuring safer working environment, on campus or at home.
On the other hand, the physical and mental impact, of these trying times and the
adjustments that need to be made to our daily lives, on the members who will work from
home also needs to be considered. To that end, I look forward to organizing virtual events
and health webinars to ensure their wellbeing and sense of community.
Though, it will be my first time for the job, I believe my experience will come handy in
ensuring the health and safety of the members. Looking forward to a healthier and safer
In Solidarity,
Sudarshan Sharma
