Hello CUPE 3906 Members,
My name is Chris and I’m re-offering for the position of Secretary-Treasurer in this year’s elections. I have been an active member of CUPE since 2016, when I first got involved with CUPE 4600 at Carleton University during my Master’s. Since then I have held positions as Chief Steward, Health and Safety Officer, delegate to Labour Council and various CUPE conventions, and mostly recently as Treasurer of CUPE 3906. I also served on the Unit 1 Bargaining Team in the most recent round of bargaining. As a labour studies student with a lengthy background in union activism, I bring a lot of knowledge and experience to my current role and to my work on the Executive Committee.
Over the last year, I’ve tried to prioritize work that would support a stronger and more militant union, while at the same time safeguarding our long-term financial security. I established a Finance Committee to give members a venue for more direct input on the budgeting process. I worked with the By-Laws committee to establish honoraria for stewards and committee chairs in recognition of the vital role these positions play in building a strong union. And I have taken a proactive approach to ensuring that our committees and working groups are able to get the funds they need to do their work effectively.
As we move into what promises to be a challenging term of office, with Unit 2 in bargaining and with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, I believe we need to continue to find creative ways to use our resources to build a stronger union and to support important struggles in the communities in which we live. I would be honoured to continue to serve as your Treasurer.
